Short answer

Most published fatwas, including the ones we cite below, classify fixed-time binary options like those on Pocket Option as not permissible (haram), mainly because of gambling (maysir) and excessive uncertainty (gharar). Pocket Option's own position and its account options are set out below, so you can weigh both with a scholar you trust.

This is a summary of published rulings, not a fatwa. Ask a qualified scholar you trust about your own situation.

What Pocket Option says

Pocket Option offers an Islamic Halal Account, which you switch on in your account settings (additional verification may be required). With it enabled there are no swap or interest charges, and some assets, including certain cryptocurrencies, are not available. Pocket Option describes the account as designed around the principles of Islamic finance: no riba, transparent fees and fewer speculative assets. It also states that it holds no certification from a major Islamic finance board, and that whether trading is halal depends on how you trade, noting that conservative scholars may still advise caution.

Why many scholars consider binary options haram

Gambling (maysir, qimar)

Each trade has only two outcomes: you win a fixed payout or lose your whole stake, and one side's gain is the other side's loss. Nothing is bought or owned; you are betting on a price movement.

Excessive uncertainty (gharar)

The result depends entirely on where the price is at a set moment, often seconds or minutes away. The Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited transactions based on this kind of uncertainty (Sahih Muslim).

No real asset

The International Islamic Fiqh Academy (Resolution 63 (1/7)) ruled that options contracts may not be traded, because what is sold is neither an asset, nor a usufruct, nor a financial right that can be exchanged for money.

Forex and CFDs at Pocket Option

Pocket Option also offers forex or CFD trading. Leveraged CFDs raise further issues: overnight swap charges (riba) and selling what you do not own. A swap-free label removes only the interest, not the other problems.

What about Islamic or swap-free accounts?

Some brokers market Islamic or swap-free accounts. Removing overnight interest deals with riba, but a fixed-time binary option has no overnight interest to begin with: the problem is the gambling structure itself. Darul Ifta Birmingham states that 'halal' binary options accounts are still impermissible.

Halal alternatives to consider

  • Buying Shariah-screened shares or ETFs outright and holding them, so you own the asset.
  • Sukuk and Islamic investment funds overseen by a Shariah board.
  • Currency exchange settled on the spot, for a real need rather than speculation.

Check any product with a scholar or the provider's Shariah board before you invest.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pocket Option halal?

Most of the fatwas we reviewed say no: they treat binary options as gambling (maysir) with excessive uncertainty (gharar). Pocket Option's own statement and account options are summarised above. Ask a qualified scholar about your own case.

Does Pocket Option have an Islamic account?

Yes. Pocket Option offers an Islamic Halal Account that you switch on in your account settings; it removes swaps and interest and restricts some assets. Pocket Option says it has no certification from a major Islamic finance board, so discuss it with a scholar you trust.

Are binary options haram in every madhab?

The rulings we reviewed, from Hanafi muftis, Islamweb's fatwa centre and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, reach the same conclusion. We are not aware of a recognised fatwa body that permits fixed-time binary options.

What should I do with profits from binary options?

Scholars commonly advise keeping your original capital and giving away the profit from impermissible transactions to charity, without expecting reward. Ask a scholar how this applies to you.
